Our skin is the body’s largest organ… Our skin is protected by an outer covering known as epidermis. Epidermis plays an important role for our body; it gives protection from a variety of pathogens, sensation, controls loss of fluid and maintains heat regulation. The skin stores lipids as well as water and helps in synthesis of some essential vitamins important for our skin. It also controls the loss of essential nutrients from our body. Our skin plays so many roles for our body, so it becomes our prime responsibility to give it the best possible treatment.
Day in and day out our skin goes through many harsh effects of the environment; be it hot sunny afternoons or biting cold morning. Did you know that even heavy wind blows can damage your skin? All these cause your skin to look dreary and lifeless. It is the skin that reflects your age, character, your moods, your emotions, etc. One can take best care of skin only if one identifies the skin type he / she has. Analyzing the type of skin one has is pretty easy and can be done at home… one need not go to any beauty parlor or a skin specialist for this. Once you know your skin type you can easily hunt for moisturizers that best suit your skin. To add to your knowledge there are in all five types of skin; normal, dry, oily, sensitive and combination.
All you would need to analyze your skin type are the following: a face wash or a face cleanser meant for normal skin, a soft towel, and oil free moisturizers.
You need to first wash off your face with a normal face cleanser or a face wash (this is available at any medical store, but make sure the packaging contains the label ‘normal’) and wipe off with a soft towel. Wait for an hour and notice your skin carefully. How does your skin? Does it give a stretch look? Does it shrink when you smile or frown? If the yes, then it means you have a dry skin.
If your skin gives a supple look after the washing and also does not develop any acne or pimples means that you have non sensitive normal skin. A normal skin does not develop any kind of reactions – allergic reactions to be specific to any type of skin products.
Now lets say, you feel a silky shine on your skin after washing with a face wash; this indicates that you have an oily skin. If your skin becomes red, and shows acne or pimples, develops broken capillaries, indicates that you have a sensitive skin. People with sensitive skin should be very careful in selecting face wash and moisturizers for their skin. Sensitive skin is prone to develop allergic reactions on using products not suitable to skin. Individuals having combination type of skin will have oily skin ll over but will have dryness around the cheeks and neck, or will have a dry skin type with acnes, or will have an oily skin with acnes.
